Peter Capaldi has been announced as The 12th Doctor in the BBC Show Doctor Who

A special BBC show titled "Doctor Who Live: The Next Doctor" was aired on Sunday 4th August to announce who will take on the role of the 12th Incarnation of The Doctor.
Zoe Ball announced that Peter Capaldi will be taking on the role from the christmas special of Doctor Who onwards. Matt Smith will be regenerating then and Peter Capaldi will take his place as The 12th Doctor.

The Special BBC show lasted a half hour featuring interviews with past doctors and companions.
Footage of past shows and old doctors as well as an interview with Matt smith who discussed his feelings about leaving the show.
Matt said "I’ve loved it. I really have and I’ll miss it. But when you gotta go, you gotta go. There was a backlash when I was cast. I was 26 and I was an unknown and people went, "That is not Doctor Who"

A special message from Matt Smith to Peter Capaldi was also played on the live show where Matt wished him good luck as playing The Doctor.

Matt Smith was unable to appear live at the event as he was in L.A filming.

Peter Capaldi will appear in his first Doctor Who episode in the new year 2014.
